The Work Schmalgasse was created during Malte Wandel’s Artist in Residence stay in Klagenfurt in 2017. At Alter Platz, Malte Wandel is approached by the young Nigerian, Henry, who had been living in the Klagenfurt refugee home at Schmalgasse 3 since 2014. From this encounter an intense friendship developed and the artist began to accompany Henry’s everyday life and the life of the Nigerian community in Klagenfurt with his camera. Exploring Klagenfurt together, they showed each other places of special personal significance. There followed a lively exchange of ideas, resulting in a very personal portrait of the town. 80 slides and 6 large format digital prints show the life of Nigerian community and deserted places – places abandoned when people had to move on.
